Our Checkers Playroom

We’re currently renting a three bedroom townhouse. Our previous home was huge, the kids had their own bedrooms plus we a lounge room sized playroom, so we have really had a cull a lot of décor and toys!

In this townhouse, we initially had the girls in two separate bedrooms, but we found this to be an impractical use of space. So instead, the girls now share a room, and we’ve created a play space in Genie’s old room. As well as the advantage of having more toy storage, Minnie and Genie really enjoy sharing a room, and we haven’t faced any challenges, it’s working really well for our family.

Wallpaper

I wanted the room to be fun and colourful, so I started with our Diamond Checkers Wallpaper in the festive peach colourway. Checkers are also really big right now, so I wanted to show our customers how they could style this fun pattern.

Me being me, I had to add some floral goodness into the room too.

Rug

Hunter and Nomad are my go to for rugs, and I was dying to style their Checker Rug in mustard. It’s bold, but I wanted to style checkers on checkers!

Sideboard

Next up was the storage! Most people choose Trofast units from Ikea for their playroom storage, but not this gal… give me an upcycled vintage piece any day of the week!

If you don’t already follow Attic Furniture on insta, do yourself a favour, and head on over for a peek at Polly’s beautiful work. I love her furniture because it looks amazing, and makes me feel a sense of nostalgia, but mostly importantly, it's sustainable.

Polly suggested a vintage sideboard, in a contrasting colour to the wallpaper. She suggested Serene by Porter’s Paints, and we decided to use wallpaper in soft peach as a feature in the open shelf at the back of the unit.

Greenery

Every room needs some green, so a pot and plant from Mimo pots was high on my list. Sage, the lovely lady behind the brand, painted the pot in Serene to match the sideboard.

Chandeliers

I already owned two chandeliers from previous projects, so Shannon from Hello Marla made me a larger third chandelier so I could hang them in a cluster. Shannon included the sage colour to compliment the green I had used in the room. They look absolutely stunning as a feature in front of the lovely sheer curtains. Hot tip: the sheers are just cheapies from Spotlight.

Hacks

Minnie and Me Interiors is well known for our love of hacks, and we offer wallpaper and decals to fit any project. We’ve had the Galaxy table and stools from Hide and Seek Kids for years, so I decided to give it a quick freshen up with vinyl and laminate, rather than wallpaper (PhotoTex) as it’s 100% waterproof and wipeable - perfect for a play room.

Décor

The remaining toys and décor we pre owned or had left over from previous projects. All are much loved pieces that add interest and beauty into the space.

The Check Wallpaper was already in the space from when this was Genie’s room. It’s actually one of my fave wallpapers of all time, so I wanted to leave it up, even though I wasn’t sure it would work with the checkers. But you know what, I love it! Pattern on pattern is super fun and attractive.

Mood Board

Here’s my VERY rough mood board, I literally just added screen shots to the pic collage app. Remember to always do a mood board, it will keep you true to your original vision.
